WASHINGTON – As the funding deadline looms, Senate Democrats have stepped up their shutdown threats, putting critical funding for national security and domestic programs in jeopardy.
In 2013, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned that shutting down the government over immigration reform would lead to “governmental chaos” and likened it to hostage taking. But now Schumer and his allies appear prepared to do just that. If Democrats follow through on their threats, they will not only be voting against funding for our troops, seniors and others who depend on federal programs, they will also be voting to strip health insurance from hundreds of thousands of children covered by CHIP, which would be extended for six years under the Republican continuing resolution. Are Senate Democrats really prepared to throw our government into chaos and take health care away from children for purely political reasons?
“Senate Democrats’ threat to shut down the government and take health insurance away from children is partisanship at its worst,” said NRSC Communications Director Katie Martin. “It’s well past time for Chuck Schumer and his cronies to stop playing political games with our national security and childrens’ health care.”
