Heidi Heitkamp is out with a new TV ad attempting to rewrite her record on border security and illegal immigration. Unfortunately for Heitkamp, no matter how many times she tries, she can’t change the fact that she repeatedly sided with liberal Democrats instead of cracking down on illegal immigration and protecting North Dakota communities.

Here’s a quick look at Heitkamp’s abysmal record when it comes to border security and illegal immigration.

  • Heitkamp refused to crack down on sanctuary cities, voting three times to continue funding sanctuary cities.
  • The Grand Forks Herald blasted Heitkamp in an editorial for failing to crack down on sanctuary cities. (Tom Dennis, “OUR OPINION: Misguided Filibuster Blocks Sanctuary Cities Bill,” Grand Forks Herald, 10/22/15)
  • Heitkamp voted against a bill that would set a mandatory minimum sentencing requirement of five years for deported felons who illegally re-enter the U.S., also known as Kate’s Law. (S. 2146, Roll Call Vote #280: Cloture On The Motion To Proceed Rejected 54-45, 10/20/15, Heitkamp Voted Nay; CQ Summary, Accessed 1/15/16)
  • Heitkamp voted to give amnesty to DREAMers without funding for a border wall. (S.Amdt. 1955 To S.Amdt. 1958 To H.R. 2579, Roll Call Vote #33: Cloture Motion Rejected 52-47, 2/15/18, Heitkamp Voted Yea; CQ Summary, Accessed 2/16/18)
  • Heitkamp voted against a border fence. (S.Amdt. 1197 To S. 744, Roll Call Vote #151: Amendment Rejected 39-54-7, 6/18/13, Heitkamp Voted Nay; CQ Summary, Accessed 1/15/16)

“Heidi Heitkamp has spent her time in the U.S. Senate refusing to take border security seriously, but now that it’s four months from Election Day, Heitkamp is making a last-ditch effort to distort her record,” said NRSC Spokesman Michael McAdams. “North Dakota voters know Heitkamp’s record has been pathetically weak when it comes to protecting our borders and getting tough on illegal immigration, and that’s one of the many reasons why her time as a U.S. Senator is dwindling.”
