Heidi Heitkamp said it best just last year that the American people deserve a fully functioning Supreme Court. With President Trump scheduled to announce his choice for the Supreme Court this evening, will Heitkamp stand by her words?
Her colleagues have already made it clear they plan to filibuster and bring down whoever President Trump picks so that leaves Heidi in quite a tough place. Will she go back on her word or will she stand by what she said just months ago?
Heitkamp on Supreme Court Vacancies:
Heitkamp: “The American People Deserve A Fully Functioning Court.”
“The American people deserve a fully functioning court. To insist that the court go through potentially two terms without a full slate of justices, it is an abdication of our responsibility as United States Senators. That responsibility is to make sure that America has a fully functioning three branches of government.” (Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Remarks on the Floor Of The U.S. Senate, 2/24/16) (2:57 – 3:17)
Heitkamp: “And So It Is Critically Important That We Spend Time Every Day Talking About How Important That Ninth Seat Is On The Supreme Court…”
(Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Remarks At Press Conference, Washington, DC, 4/19/16) (1:00-1:10)
Heitkamp: “But Beyond That, The Judiciary Is An Incredibly Important Part Of Our Checks And Balances. And When We Don’t Have A Functioning Judiciary, We Do Not Have A Functioning Democracy.”
(Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Remarks On The Floor Of The U.S. Senate, 9/7/16) (7:24-7:38)
