It’s been a horrific week for John Hickenlooper. The Independent Ethics Commission just levied the highest penalty in its history against Hickenlooper for his use of a corporate-paid private jet and Maserati limo. The Commission also denied Hickenlooper’s motion to purge his contempt charge.

“The Ethics Commission’s decision to order John Hickenlooper pay the highest penalty in Commission history is an important step toward accountability,” said NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez. “Hickenlooper violated the Colorado constitution, disrespected the rule of law, and forced the Commission to subpoena him and find him in contempt before answering their questions. Coloradans deserve better, and they deserve to be refunded for the hours billed as a result of Hickenlooper’s erratic behavior these past few weeks.”

This comes on top of what was already a rough week for the Hickenlooper campaign, including:

  • Allegations of lying under oath during last week’s IEC hearing,
  • Advocates from his own party calling his record on police reform “atrocious” in The Denver Post,
  • A shocking investigation from CBS Denver that “uncovered millions of dollars in donations from corporations and private foundations to the governor’s office” throughout Hickenlooper’s administration with “no oversight”, and
  • Two AWFUL primary debate performances — one where he refused to apologize for his ethics violations and a second where he said George Floyd had been shot and refused to answer whether he’d refund taxpayers for his $525-an-hour ethics lawyer.
