Tom Hassan who was President of the prestigious boarding school, Phillips Exeter Academy, is facing criticism for how he handled Professor Richard Schubart’s admitted sexual misconduct. Mr. Hassan failed to make both instances public.

Governor Maggie Hassan, despite living on the boarding school campus with her husband at the time, claims that while she “sensed something was wrong,” it wasn’t enough to preclude her from accepting campaign donations from Schubart or naming him to her campaign steering committee.

Now – people across New England are calling for answers, including an editorial in today’s New Hampshire Union Leader.

Maggie Hassan must explain what she knew, and when, and why she didn’t take further action if she “sensed something was wrong.”

In October 2011, Maggie Hassan listed Schubart among “community leaders” endorsing her for governor…

On Friday, Gov. Hassan said she “sensed something was wrong” with Schubart’s abrupt departure, but insists her husband never told her the specifics. Her suspicions didn’t prevent her from re-issuing Schubart’s endorsement in March 2012 on a list of supporters.

Gov. Hassan should clarify her confusing statements on this scandal. What exactly did she know about Schubart’s forced retirement, and her husband’s decision to hush it up? And why was she content to keep Schubart as part of her campaign?
