Washington, D.C. – Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) outlined why J.D. Vance’s policies are better for Ohioans who are suffering under a Democrat-controlled Senate.

Under Democrat leadership, inflation is at a 40-year high, America is no longer energy independent, and there is an unprecedented crisis at the Southern border. A vote for Tim Ryan is a vote to continue down this disastrous path that Washington Democrats have put us on.

Here’s more from Senator Rob Portman on why J.D. Vance is the right choice for Ohio:

Vance win in Ohio essential to GOP-controlled Senate

In the U.S. Senate race this fall, I am supporting the Republican nominee, JD Vance, because I believe his policies are far better for Ohioans. Here are a few examples.

Vance supports commonsense policies to lower inflation and get our economy back on the right track.  Over the last two years, Democrats controlling the House, the Senate and the White House have gone on a reckless spending spree that has directly contributed to the highest rate of inflation in 40 years. Most recently, in the partisan reconciliation bill, Democrats added complicated new tax increases on a weak economy, combined with more stimulus spending. All this is hurting working families in Ohio who are faced with soaring costs on groceries, gas, rent and more.  Vance opposes higher taxes and spending and supports pro-growth policies to help struggling families.

Under a Republican-led Congress, we passed pro-growth tax and regulatory reform that, prior to COVID, helped give us the best economy in generations, leading to strong gains in jobs and wage growth, the lowest unemployment rate ever for Hispanics, Blacks and women, and the lowest poverty rate in the history of our country – all while inflation remained low. That’s what Vance supports.

One of those pro-growth policies is a smart, all-of-the-above energy policy. When President Biden came into office he immediately shut down construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and issued a moratorium on new leases on public lands and water, which had a chilling effect on North American energy development, and through onerous reforms to the NEPA process, made it harder to permit needed energy infrastructure. The result is the administration looks to nations like Iran and Venezuela to supply our nation’s energy instead of our own domestic producers.

This was a significant departure from Republican policies that focused on an all-of -the-above energy approach, including expanding North American energy production and strengthening our nation’s energy security. Vance is committed to getting back to energy independence by using our abundant natural resources right here in Ohio and around the country to lower the price at the pump and lower utility bills.

Another stark policy difference between Republicans and Democrats is the southern border.  Last month marked the highest level of unlawful crossings ever and deadly fentanyl is surging across the border.  Vance understands that the border crisis was created by the Biden administration’s deliberate policy choices that have allowed Mexican cartels to traffic more and more unlawful migrants and push deadly substances like fentanyl into our communities.

The Biden administration revoked many of the policies of the prior administration without any replacement. Unlawful migrants and traffickers know that if they come to our southern border, there is a high probability they will be allowed in. Border security is not rocket science – we simply need the political will to tackle it.  Vance supports sensible policy changes to regain operational control of the border, including supporting an overwhelmed Border Patrol and ensuring they have the tools and resources they need to do their job effectively.

Vance has a compelling personal story Ohioans are hearing about in the campaign.  Like too many families in Ohio and around the country, he grew up in a home impacted by addiction. He was mostly raised by his grandparents in Middletown, Ohio.  He joined the Marines after high school and served our nation in Iraq.  He later went on to attend The Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and wrote his New York Times bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy.

Growing up in Middletown, he saw the impact of jobs and economic opportunity moving out his hometown, forcing many family and friends to start over.  It’s the reason Vance’s experience in business has focused on growing companies that create good-paying jobs for families.

Ohio is key to a Republican majority in the Senate, and the need for that majority has never been clearer.  Policy choices made by a Democratic-controlled Washington are hurting working families.  We need a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate to provide a check and balance on the Biden Administration, and a Vance victory in Ohio is essential to accomplishing that goal.

The choice is clear.  JD Vance will oppose the Biden administration’s destructive policy choices for working families and support policies that will reduce inflation and strengthen our economy, lower energy prices, and face up to the crisis at our southern border. His opponent will do the opposite.

Rob Portman is Terrace Park Republican.
