Prisoners took over the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center today, assaulting guards and holding hostages. The riot happened under Roy Cooper’s Democrat ally, Bertie Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin, whom Cooper appointed to the North Carolina Juvenile Justice Planning Committee.
“Inmates are running the asylum under Roy Cooper’s soft-on-crime regime. Cooper’s legacy of putting criminals over North Carolinians’ safety and supporting defund the police radicals has made the state less safe,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia.
Roy Cooper and his soft-on-crime allies made North Carolina less safe. Cooper-appointed judges:
- Released a criminal who was arrested for strangling and punching a woman, and went on to commit murder. The criminal “had already collected at least 37 felony and 9 misdemeanor charges.”
- Drastically reduced bond for Krista Noelle Madden—a mother accused of trying to kill her 7-week-old daughter.
- Dropped the bond of a rape suspect from $2 million to just $50,000, telling the suspect, “We’re gonna help you out.”
- Overturned the conviction of a man who pled guilty to two rapes.
Roy Cooper puts criminals and dangerous illegals over North Carolinians’ safety.
- Cooper agreed to release at least 3,500 criminals from prison early, and nearly half went on to reoffend, committing felonies like homicides, sex offenses, and other violent crimes.
- Iryna Zarutska’s killer, pedophiles, murderers, and rapists made Cooper’s early release list.
- Under Cooper, nearly 500 illegals were released from prison and back onto the streets, including those charged with rape and murder.
- Just hours before he left office, Cooper took 15 convicted killers off death row, enraging victims’ family members.
- Cooper’s soft-on-crime Racial Equity and Criminal Justice Task Force recommended radical and dangerous policies like eliminating cash bail, pushing “alternatives to arrest,” and pretrial release.
- Cooper vetoed three pieces of legislation in 2019 and 2022 requiring North Carolina sheriffs to cooperate with ICE and deport dangerous illegals.
