WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, on the third day of Chuck Schumer’s government shutdown, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) again voted in favor of Republicans’ clean government funding bill to reopen the government. Senate Democrats continue to push for their outrageous demands that include $1.5 trillion in new spending, funding free healthcare for illegal aliens, and cutting $50 billion for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.
“John Cornyn has voted repeatedly to fund our government, pay our service members, ensure farmers and ranchers have the resources they need, and secure critical veterans’ benefits,” said NRSC Communications Director Joanna Rodriguez. “Meanwhile, Jasmine Crockett, Colin Allred, and James Talarico are all supporting Chuck Schumer shutting down the government to give illegal aliens free healthcare.”
Chuck Schumer and Texas Democrats’ shutdown is:
- Leaving military families without pay
- Putting law enforcement lives on the line
- Jeopardizing flood insurance for millions of Americans during hurricane season
- Threatening vital healthcare and housing programs for veterans
- Allowing funding for a critical Medicare patients’ treatment program to expire
- Hurting farmers and ranchers who need certainty to produce our food
- Driving up food prices for America’s most needy families
Democrats are demanding $1.5 trillion in spending increases to end the shutdown and to:
- Cut $50 billion in rural healthcare funding
- Restore Biden-era free healthcare for illegal aliens
- Expand taxpayer-funded Medicaid to unemployed, able-bodied individuals without dependents under 14 years old
- Eliminate Republican-passed fraud protections for taxpayer benefits like Medicaid and SNAP
