WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today is the ninth day of Chuck Schumer’s government shutdown and Senate Democrats just voted for a seventh time to keep the government shuttered.
“The government shutdown led by Haley Stevens and Democrats in the Senate is preventing a disabled veteran in Michigan from going to college and causing 2,000 active-duty service members to miss their paycheck,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. “If Haley Stevens, Mallory McMorrow, or Abdul El-Sayed were in the Senate today, they have all said they would have voted with Chuck Schumer to hold the government hostage over their demand to give illegal aliens free healthcare.”
Today, Chuck Schumer said, “Every day [of the shutdown] gets better for us.” After a coordinated, months-long campaign with radical activists, Democrats are holding firm on liberal demands including free healthcare for illegal aliens, $1.5 trillion in new wasteful spending, and cutting $50 billion in funding for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.
The devastating impacts of Democrats taking the government hostage are piling up in Michigan:
- 56,000 federal workers are furloughed or forced to work without pay
- 10,600 Social Security checks are delayed
- 189,000 Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program recipients will not receive nutritional support
- Small businesses face delays of $92 million in loans because the Small Business Administration is frozen
- A disabled veteran cannot get his veterans benefits in order to go to college
- 2,000 active-duty service members will miss their paycheck
- Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior is severely limiting visitor and emergency services
- Staffing shortages continue to stack up at airports across the country
- Small businesses nationwide are feeling the pain
- Farmers and ranchers are unable to access critical services
- Estimated costs of over $15 billion a week to the American economy
Michigan Democrats support Chuck Schumer’s ridiculous government shutdown:
- Haley Stevens voted against the Continuing Resolution in the House of Representatives.
- HYPOCRISY ALERT: In January 2024, Stevens said she was “relieved” that Speaker Johnson agreed to keep the government open and that “it’s our job to solve problems for Americans, not add to them.” Previously, Stevens lamented how a shutdown will impact millions of Americans and called to “quit it with the political stunts.”
- Stevens said the 2019 shutdown would “jeopardize the financial stability of working families,” was unacceptable to the federal workforce and automakers, and create a “public health threat by sidelining the FDA.”
- In July 2025, Mallory McMorrow said she would “align” with Senator Elissa Slotkin’s vote to shut down the government.
- In September 2025, Abdul El-Sayed tweeted, “No, I would not vote for the CR” and that Democrats don’t owe Donald Trump their votes to keep the government open.
- When asked if he would vote for the continuing resolution, Abdul El-Sayed said “I
would not vote for a continuing resolution.”
