WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Senate is expected to vote on funding the federal government. There is no question where Michigan Democrats stand — Haley Stevens, Mallory McMorrow, and Abdul El-Sayed all support Schumer’s reckless shutdown. Senate Democrats’ radical demands include $1.5 trillion in new spending, free healthcare for illegal immigrants, and cutting $50 billion in funding for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.
But it doesn’t stop there, Mallory McMorrow is even pushing to shut down the Michigan state government over more outrageous demands.
“Chuck Schumer and the entire Democrat Party are holding the federal government hostage in a ridiculous attempt to force their woke wish list on Americans,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. “If Chuck Schumer and Michigan Democrats had their way, Michiganders would be forced to pay for free healthcare for illegal aliens, an end to fraud protections for taxpayer benefits, and a $50 billion cut to rural healthcare funding.”
Michigan Democrats support Chuck Schumer’s ridiculous government shutdown:
- Haley Stevens voted against the Continuing Resolution in the House of Representatives.
- HYPOCRISY ALERT: In January 2024, Stevens said she was “relieved” that Speaker Johnson agreed to keep the government open and that “it’s our job to solve problems for Americans, not add to them.” Previously, Stevens lamented how a shutdown will impact millions of Americans and called to “quit it with the political stunts.”
- Stevens said the 2019 shutdown would “jeopardize the financial stability of working families,” was unacceptable to the federal workforce and automakers, and create a “public health threat by sidelining the FDA.”
- In July 2025, Mallory McMorrow said she would “align” with Senator Elissa Slotkin’s vote to shut down the government.
- In September 2025, Abdul El-Sayed tweeted, “No, I would not vote for the CR” and that Democrats don’t owe Donald Trump their votes to keep the government open.
- When asked if he would vote for the continuing resolution, Abdul El-Sayed said “I
would not vote for a continuing resolution.”
Schumer’s Shutdown would:
- Leave military families without pay
- Put law enforcement lives on the line
- Jeopardize flood insurance for millions of Americans during hurricane season
- Threaten vital healthcare and housing programs for veterans
- Allow funding for a critical Medicare patients’ treatment program to expire
- Hurt farmers and ranchers who need certainty to produce our food
- Drive up food prices for America’s most needy families
Democrats are demanding $1.5 trillion in spending increases to end the shutdown and:
- Cut $50 billion in rural healthcare funding
- Restore Biden-era free healthcare for illegal aliens
- Expand taxpayer-funded Medicaid to unemployed, able-bodied individuals without dependents under 14 years old
- Eliminate Republican-passed fraud protections for taxpayer benefits like Medicaid and SNAP
