WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the government shutdown supported by Michigan’s Senate Democrat primary candidates nears one month, funding for SNAP is scheduled to run out this week, jeopardizing assistance for over 1.4 million Michiganders.
“As the government shutdown supported by Michigan Democrats rages on, over 1.4 million Michiganders are now at risk of not receiving the assistance they need to buy groceries and feed their kids,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. “Michigan deserves a Senator who will fight for families, not Haley Stevens, Mallory McMorrow, and Abdul El-Sayed who would prioritize free healthcare for illegal aliens over starving children.”
The Haley Stevens, Mallory McMorrow, Abdul El-Sayed backed Schumer Shutdown threatens vital assistance for families:
- On October 10, 2025, the Department of Agriculture sent a letter to state agencies advising state processors to “hold their November issuance files and delay transmission to State EBT vendors until further notice.” The letter stated that there were only enough funds to keep the SNAP program going through October 2025.
- In Michigan, there are around 1,474,000 total enrollees in SNAP, and an estimated 572,000 who are children.
- Chuck Schumer said, “Every day gets better for [Democrats],” reaffirming that this shutdown is political leverage in their fight to give illegal aliens free healthcare.
- Democrats have voted 12 times to keep the government closed and Michiganders are the ones paying the price.
- Democrats’ partisan proposal to reopen the government demands free healthcare for illegal aliens and gutting the historic $50 billion investment in rural healthcare delivered by President Trump’s Working Family Tax Cuts law.
- Haley Stevens voted against the Continuing Resolution in the House of Representatives.
- HYPOCRISY ALERT: In January 2024, Stevens said she was “relieved” that Speaker Johnson agreed to keep the government open and that “it’s our job to solve problems for Americans, not add to them.” Previously, Stevens lamented how a shutdown will impact millions of Americans and called to “quit it with the political stunts.”
- Stevens said the 2019 shutdown would “jeopardize the financial stability of working families,” was unacceptable to the federal workforce and automakers, and would have created a “public health threat by sidelining the FDA.”
- In July 2025, Mallory McMorrow said she would “align” with Senator Elissa Slotkin’s vote to shut down the government.
- In September 2025, Abdul El-Sayed tweeted, “No, I would not vote for the CR” and that Democrats don’t owe Donald Trump their votes to keep the government open.
- When asked if he would vote for the continuing resolution, Abdul El-Sayed said “I
would not vote for a continuing resolution.”
