Today, Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar voted to shut down the federal government. The Senators voted against cloture. Had the vote failed, the Senate would have been unable to proceed, and Smith and Klobuchar would have successfully shut down the government.

“Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar voted for a government shutdown which would have hurt hard-working families in Minnesota,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “Minnesotans deserve a real champion for their livelihoods, and they’ll have that chance in 2026.”

Smith previously opposed shutting down the government:

  • Smith in November, 2019: “Government shutdowns have real human
    consequences.”
  • Smith in February, 2019: “Why should hardworking people be forced to pay for the price of the shutdown themselves?”
  • Smith in January, 2019: “It’s not fair low-wage federal contractors – like janitorial, food, & security services workers – don’t get paid during the shutdown.”
