The NRSC’s original FOIA request was filed nearly 20 months ago and is coincidentally slated for a completion date just after Wisconsinites vote.
After tremendous public pressure and the threat of a lawsuit, a recent news report indicated that the State Department grudgingly agreed to grant expedited processing to a similar FOIA request by The Washington Free Beacon. In doing so, it is evident that the State Department sees a compelling need to release the records prior to Election Day.
The State Department’s curious stonewalling – 600 days and counting, is only compounded by Senator Feingold’s eerily similar refusal to release his own travel records and expenses amid allegations that he violated federal law.
As with campaign finance reform, Senator Feingold was once a staunch proponent of the Freedom of Information Act – that is, until it stood in the way of his desperate bid for yet another term in the United States Senate.
