Today, Gary Peters (D-MI) flip-flopped on his support of the Laken Riley Act after voting against the legislation last year. The bipartisan legislation would require the detainment of illegal migrants accused of theft, burglary and other related crimes. Peters is up for re-election in 2026.
“After 22-year-old college student Laken Riley was brutally murdered by an illegal immigrant, Gary Peters voted against the Laken Riley Act which would stop tragedies like this from happening again,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia. “His reversal today is complete hypocrisy. Michiganders’ safety should always come first, and Peters must be held accountable for waiting until he’s up for re-election to support this bill.”
