Washington, D.C. – The National Republican Senatorial Committee released the following statement on the results of the Colorado Democratic primary:
“By selecting John Hickenlooper as their nominee, Democrats put their hopes in a ‘sh–show‘ campaign team and the guy who said himself he was ‘not cut out to be a Senator‘,” said NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez. “Over the next few months, voters are going to learn what Hickenlooper has been hiding – about his disregard for the law, his misuse of taxpayer funds, and all the illegal gifts and travel from his corporate sugar daddies. If watching him fall apart under pressure these last few weeks is any indication, ‘hot mess‘ Hickenlooper is in for a very bumpy ride.”
BACKGROUND
Months ago, Hickenlooper’s nomination was practically guaranteed, but his own “stumbles” – like breaking Colorado ethics laws, being found in contempt for ignoring a subpoena, and various racial controversies – have been so concerning that even his fellow Democrats have gone on the record to call Hick a “hot mess” and his campaign a “sh–show.”
Hickenlooper and his allies, including a “last-minute” super PAC and Schumer’s Senate Majority PAC, have spent nearly $7.5 million after Hickenlooper’s campaign signaled the need for outside groups to defend him. They’ve called in a “cavalry” of surrogates to pearl clutch when Romanoff attacked Hickenlooper on TV, and to defend Hickenlooper’s progressive credentials.
Hickenlooper was recently found in violation of Colorado ethics laws at least twice in his final year as Governor. Eighty-nine other allegations related to his first seven years as Governor have not been investigated because they fell outside the Colorado Independent Ethics Commission’s statute of limitations. Hickenlooper, who claims to be a ‘believer in transparency‘ has refused to release unredacted records relating to his corporate-paid travel.
