Washington, D.C. –  Following today’s U.S. Senate campaign announcement by Sara Gideon, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) issued the following statement:

“Susan Collins is the most independent Senator in the country because of her ability to work across party lines to get things done for Maine,” said NRSC spokesperson Nathan Brand. “Chosen by Schumer and Washington Democrats, Sara Gideon is an extreme partisan who will give away Maine’s voice to radical leftists like Pelosi and AOC.”

Senator Collins is the most independent and bipartisan Senator in the country, according to the Lugar Center Bipartisan Index. Because of Collins bipartisan accomplishments for Maine, voters have re-elected her by larger and larger vote margins each cycle.

Chuck Schumer and Washington Democrats have been courting Gideon after high-profile and statewide elected Democrats declined to run against Collins. Obama Administration national security adviser Susan Rice, 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree, 2nd District Rep. Jared Golden, and former Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree all declined to run against Collins.

Gideon joins a crowded and contentious Democratic primary with lobbyist Betsy Sweet and Saco Lawyer Bre Kidman. Betsy Sweet has already earned the endorsement of the far-left Democracy for America and has garnered support from Maine socialists in past elections.
