‘Campaign Sherrod’ vs. ‘Washington Sherrod’: Is Sherrod Brown a fighter for Ohio workers or lackey for elitist insiders?

In his bid for US Senate in 2026, Brown’s campaign claimed his third quarter fundraising haul was “powered by an army of grassroots donors.” However, Federal Election Commission reports show 74% of disclosed donations are out-of-state, with nearly 40% from California, New York, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and 63% of maxed-out donors from “leftist states” like those plus Massachusetts, Connecticut and Washington.

While he touts being “for Ohioans” Brown has booked a December fundraiser in California hosted by Hollywood figures, fueling questions about his priorities.

“Voters rejected Sherrod Brown [in 2024] after he was exposed representing California’s radical left values instead of Ohio’s. These numbers show nothing’s changed and Brown still cares more about representing out-of-state Democrats and Hollywood elites than hard-working Ohioans,” said Nick Puglia, National Republican Senatorial Committee regional press secretary.

Brown frequently invokes a Midwestern, farm-boy persona, despite growing up in Mansfield, Ohio in a family where his father was a doctor and his mother a Democratic activist. Brown graduated from Yale University with a degree in Russian studies and has held public office since the 1970s.

In-state sources accounted for 87% of [Jon Husted’s] funds, according to OpenSecrets.

Brown’s office was contacted for comment but did not respond by the time this report was published.

“Sherrod Brown has spent three decades in D.C. fighting for the interests of D.C. and the coastal elites. Meanwhile, Jon Husted has disrupted their out-of-touch liberal agenda. It’s no surprise they’re doubling down on their champion. Ohioans know better, which is why they overwhelmingly voted to send Brown packing last November and are now supporting Husted’s re-election,” said Tyson Shepard, spokesman for Sen. Husted’s campaign.
