With the Intelligence Committee vote on Gina Haspel’s nomination as CIA director coming up, red state Democrats are still dodging questions on whether they’ll vote in her favor. These vulnerable Democrats are facing intense pressure from the liberal base to oppose Haspel, despite support for her confirmation from across the political spectrum and the fact that she’s widely regarded as the most qualified person for this vital national security position.

Led by liberal 2020 contenders, Senate Dems are plotting an attempt to block the eminently qualified nominee over concerns that she’s too harsh on terrorists. As these Senators fight over who is most in line with the far-left “resistance,” they’re ignoring public safety and forcing their red state colleagues to choose between appeasing the base and putting national security ahead of politics.

As red state Democrat Senators arrive on Capitol Hill today, it is a great opportunity to see where they stand when it comes to filling a top national security position with a highly qualified candidate praised by both sides.
