President Obama is headed to Michigan today in a last ditch effort to convince Black voters to support Abdul El-Sayed.

“Abdul El-Sayed is doing so badly with Black Michiganders that he is being forced to cozy up to President Obama, who put Abdul’s sister-in-law on the terrorist watchlist and whose election Abdul said was ‘no victory,’” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell.

Abdul El-Sayed really really doesn’t like President Obama:

  • Mariam Jukaku, Abdul El-Sayed’s sister-in-law, was put on the terrorist watchlist by the Obama Administration.
  • Abdul wrote in 2012 that President Obama failed to deliver “hope and change” and  that “this leader has perpetuated war, violated our civil liberties, deported more people from our shores than any other president before him, and the list of his failures goes on.”
  • Abdul said that President Obama’s 2012 reelection was “no victory” and “the rock we chose over the hard place.”
  • In 2017, Abdul sat down for an interview with Vox titled, “Don’t call this man the ‘next Obama”” and said “I don’t think he was strong enough on things like health care. I don’t think he was strong enough when it comes to regulating big banks. I don’t think he was strong enough when it came to campaign finance reform, or strong enough on immigration.”
  • In January 2020, Abdul argued, “We are going to continue to make the same mistakes of the past eight years under Barack Obama… We are not, as a country, better off eight years after Obama was elected in 2008 than we were when he was elected…”
  • Polls show Mike Rogers up at least 10 points from 2024 with Black voters.
