Retread Ted Strickland played defense all week over several issues including his cancelled fundraiser with Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe who is under FBI investigation, Strickland’s lack of leadership regarding NCR leaving Ohio with more than 1,000 jobs, his hypocrisy on outside special interest money, and of course – the political blow he suffered yesterday when the United Mine Workers of America endorsed Rob Portman for his leadership protecting Ohio’s coal jobs. Strickland is also under fire for promoting unpaid Democratic state party fellowships despite having made “fair wages” a cornerstone of his campaign.

In case you missed it, here are the highlights:

Dayton Daily News: GOP blames Strickland for NCR loss

“NCR’s exit cost Dayton about 1,250 well-paying jobs — with $2.5 million in city income tax revenue — and its last Fortune 500 company. ‘Gov. Ted Strickland didn’t care,’ Ohio Rep. Niraj Antani, R-Miamisburg, said in a press conference in the shadow of the Carillon Thursday. ‘He didn’t do anything to try to save those jobs, to try to replenish those jobs when they left,” Antani said. “And that is not leadership.’”

__AP Ohio: Coal miners PAC backs Portman over Strickland for US Senate__

“The endorsement by the United Mine Workers of America’s National Council of Coal Miners PAC came as a political blow to Strickland…COMPAC backed both Strickland’s gubernatorial campaigns in 2006 and 2010. Strickland is tied to presidential contender Hillary Clinton, who alienated coal miners in March when she said "we’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business." Clinton later said she misspoke, but the comment has drawn fire in mining communities in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.”

Washington Free Beacon: Strickland Rails Against Outside Group Spending, Benefits From Outside Groups

“At the same time that the campaign for Ted Strickland has railed against outside group spending in the Ohio Senate race, the Democratic candidate has benefitted considerably from money spent by super PACs and outside groups…[T]he Democrat stands to benefit from the millions spent by the Senate Majority PAC and other outside groups. The campaign’s message of opposition to big money in elections has not changed. One day after the Senate Majority PAC announced its nearly $10 million ad purchase, the Strickland campaign circulated a petition to ‘keep dark money out of our elections.’”

Washington Free Beacon: ‘Fair Wage’ Proponent Ted Strickland Promotes Unpaid Positions

“Ted Strickland, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate, on Wednesday encouraged Ohioans to apply for the state Democratic Party’s unpaid, often full-time summer fellowships, despite having made ‘fair wages’ and a federal minimum wage increase a cornerstone of his campaign…Strickland’s endorsement of the unpaid positions appears to run counter to his commitment to a ‘fair wage’ for Ohioans and Americans across the country. Strickland says he supports increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 and will fight to protect and strengthen overtime wage laws if he wins election to the Senate.”
