Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Democrats voted against a commonsense amendment from Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to prevent changes to the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction that would benefit the wealthy.
SALT deductions offer millionaires and billionaires in high-tax blue states like Pelosi’s California and Schumer’s New York to deduct their state and local tax bill from their federal bill. It has been rightfully opposed by Senator Bernie Sanders who once said that it: “sends a terrible, terrible message when you have Republicans telling us that this is a tax break for the rich.” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the de facto Majority Leader, called it a “giveaway to the rich.”
But that didn’t stop vulnerable Democrat Senators Raphael Warnock, Maggie Hassan, Mark Kelly, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Michael Bennet from voting down the amendment and giving a massive tax break to the most wealthy in their state.
Statement from NRSC Spokesman T.W. Arrighi: “Democrats love to talk about tax hikes for the wealthy, but when the rich are the ones who reside in their high-tax states and donate to their campaigns, the game changes. It is blatant hypocrisy. The Democrats have twisted their agenda into such a pretzel, they now are outwardly pushing for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. You simply can’t make this stuff up.”
