WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today is the ninth day of Chuck Schumer’s government shutdown and Senate Democrats just voted for a seventh time to keep the government shuttered.

“With harvest in full swing, Democrats continue to shut down the government and prevent hardworking farmers from accessing the resources they need,” said Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. “Every single Iowa Democrat cheering on Chuck Schumer’s shutdown supports him throwing Iowa’s farmers under the bus, just to demand illegal aliens get free healthcare.”

Today, Chuck Schumer said, “Every day [of the shutdown] gets better for us.” After a coordinated, months-long campaign with radical activists, Democrats are holding firm on liberal demands including free healthcare for illegal aliens, $1.5 trillion in new wasteful spending, and cutting $50 billion in funding for rural hospitals provided by the Working Family Tax Cuts.

The devastating impacts of Democrats taking the government hostage are piling up in Iowa:

  • Around 18,000 federal workers are furloughed or forced to work without pay
  • 62,000 Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program recipients will not receive nutritional support
  • Local food pantries across Des Moines are stockpiling in anticipation of the shutdown dragging on and WIC funding running dry
  • Iowa National Guard members will not be paid, including some currently deployed in the Middle East
  • 2,800 Social Security checks are delayed
  • Farmers and ranchers are unable to access critical services
  • County-level USDA service offices are closed
  • Iowa Corn Growers Association President Mark Mueller said the shutdown is a “major concern” to farmers in the middle of harvest season, “…the closure of many local Farm Service Agency offices and the suspension of crucial market and crop reports are creating significant uncertainty…”
  • Iowa State University warned of a delay in research operations due to lapse in federal grants
  • Staffing shortages continue to stack up at airports across the country
  • Small businesses nationwide are feeling the pain
  • Estimated costs of over $15 billion a week to the American economy

Background:

  • Ashley Hinson voted in favor of the Continuing Resolution in the House of Representatives.
  • In September 2025, Nathan Sage said that he is “not a big advocate” for shutting down the government but wants Senate Democrats to shut down the government to “help people.”
  • Zach Wahls said Senate Democratic leadership should be “using every tool in the toolbox” in fighting Republicans. He declined to say whether or not he would keep the government open.
