The 2016 election may have ended nearly two years ago, but West Virginians haven’t forgotten that Joe Manchin betrayed them by backing Hillary Clinton, even after her promise to put coal miners out of work.

At a campaign event in Morgantown last weekend, Manchin was questioned by a voter about why he would continue to back a candidate whose policies would be so disastrous for the state he is supposed to be looking out for. In a rambling response, during which Manchin appeared to forget which years he was Governor (Manchin said he was Governor during the Bill Clinton administration, but didn’t take office until 2005), the Democrat claimed he supported Hillary Clinton because she would have been good for West Virginia, despite wanting to shut down the state’s most vital industry. There are a lot of families who depend on coal jobs who would disagree.
