Today, Heidi Heitkamp finally announced the worst kept secret in North Dakota, she’s running for reelection.

Heitkamp’s announcement immediately makes her one of the most vulnerable Senators seeking reelection. With President Trump’s commanding 36-point victory in November, folks in North Dakota made it clear they don’t want out-of-touch Democrats, like Heidi, representing them. And given her record, Heitkamp is going to have a tough time convincing thousands of North Dakotans she’s anything but a phony. Heitkamp likes to talk about protecting North Dakota when she’s home, but in Washington, Heitkamp has voted with Senate Democrats nearly 80 percent of the time, voting against North Dakota’s energy interests, flip-flopping on Obamacare, and weakening national security.

“North Dakotans are sick and tired of Heitkamp abandoning them when it really matters,” said NRSC Spokesman Michael McAdams. “Folks in North Dakota are ready to show Heitkamp the door, and elect someone willing to fight for their interests all the time.”

Background:
• Heitkamp votes with the Democrat Party 79 percent of the time. (CQ Vote Studies, Accessed 7/7/17)
• Heitkamp supported an Obama-era BLM environmental regulation limiting methane release on oil and gas operators. (Roll Call Vote #125, 5/10/17, Heitkamp Voted Nay; CQ Summary Accessed 8/1/17; Press Release, 8/18/15)
• During her 2012 Senate race, Heitkamp claimed that she had always been critical of ObamaCare. Politico reported that there was no evidence Heitkamp raised concerns about the law until she was a candidate for Senate. Heitkamp’s campaign couldn’t provide Politico with an instance of her criticizing ObamaCare prior to the 2012 Senate race. (Politico, 3/23/12)
• Heitkamp supports Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal and voted three times against the resolution disapproving of it. (Press Release, 9/3/15; Roll Call Vote #267, 9/17/15, Heitkamp Voted Nay; Roll Call Vote #265, 9/15/15, Heitkamp Voted Nay; Roll Call Vote #264, 9/10/15, Heitkamp Voted Nay)
