Recent reporting from the Union Leader highlighted Chris Pappas’ punt on how he would vote on President Trump’s nominations in the Senate. Current Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan have been attacked for breaking party lines to support Trump’s nominees, and Granite Staters deserve to know where Chris Pappas stands. In the House of Representatives, Chris Pappas voted with Nancy Pelosi 222 out of 223 possible times.
“Advice and consent is one of the most important Constitutional roles given to the United States Senate, but instead of being honest with Granite Staters about how he would vote, Chris Pappas is punting,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell.
More from the Union Leader:
Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, both D-N.H., joined in a party-line vote against moving forward 97 nominees by President Trump to federal posts including ex-state judicial legal counsel Erin Creegan to become New Hampshire’s permanent U.S. attorney; Creegan has held the interim job since Trump tapped her.
Both senators said Creegan was qualified, but joined colleagues to block the blanket move to give Trump more nominees than former President Joe Biden during in his first year in office.
As we first reported, a liberal group sent more than $200,000 on digital and broadcast ads blasting Hassan just for having backed a few Trump judicial nominees who had bipartisan support.
Since the advice-and-consent role is the Senate’s domain, how would Democratic hopeful Pappas have voted had he been there?
A campaign spokesperson gave this non-answer answer: “As a member of the United States Senate for New Hampshire, Congressman Pappas would carry out his duties to provide advice and consent with the seriousness it requires,” the statement read.
“When that time comes, he will closely review every nomination that comes before him, consider the merits of each nominee, and vote in the best interests of the people of New Hampshire.”
