Mallory McMorrow complains about cost of watching football, but wants to create Lions ticket tax

Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow is blaming President Donald Trump for football commercials.

The Royal Oak Democrat posted a video to X on Sunday that takes aim at the 47th POTUS for what she described as “corporate greed” in NFL RedZone’s decision to end commercial-free programming.

“You deserve a break on Sundays that doesn’t break the bank,” McMorrow wrote in the post accompanying the video.

“Football is back, and seven hours of commercial-free football is not,” she said in the video.

“This is just the latest example of corporate greed ruining the things we love, because it’s not just commercials on TV, it’s also your grocery store run,” McMorrow continued, lamenting the price of chicken wings, chips and beer.

The complaints contradict efforts by McMorrow and other Senate Democrats in recent years to concoct an “amusement tax” for fans at Lions games and others that never ultimately materialized.

McMorrow told Bridge Detroit last year that she wants to expand the proposed “amusement tax” to apply to a variety of venues across the state.

“I’m going to solicit feedback from all of my colleagues to have those conversations,” McMorrow, one of three Democrats vying for a U.S. Senate seat in 2026, told the news site. “Is it zoos or museums or minor league baseball teams? What’s the scale, what’s the size to make sure that this is something that the majority of the Legislature is interested in at least taking a look at?”
